Universitas Indonesia Contributes to Arts and Cultural Heritage

Contribution to Local Arts and Heritage through Public Performances

The Makara Art Center (MAC) was established by Rector’s Decree No. 1688 of 2017, and its duties and authorities are defined in Rector’s Regulation No. 051 of 2017. These regulations provide the formal framework for MAC’s operations and mandate its role within Universitas Indonesia. MAC serves as a center for high-quality artistic activity at Universitas Indonesia and aims to have an impact at the national and international levels. It curates and hosts performances, exhibitions, and programs that showcase artistic excellence and foster cultural exchange.

MAC holds three primary authorities:

  1. It manages, develops, and enhances the arts center’s facilities and builds partnerships with external organizations.
  2. It supports integrated campus arts programs, encourages artistic engagement, and upgrades facilities and equipment to produce outputs aligned with arts programs.
  3. It educates the public about the arts and supports Universitas Indonesia’s artistic initiatives.

In addition to MAC, Universitas Indonesia also has various student-led communities in arts and culture, including Karawitan Jawa Sekar Widya Makara, Marching Band Madah Bahana UI, Krida Budaya UI Student Dance League, Paragita Student Choir, Theater, and Mahawaditra Symphony Orchestra.
Throughout 2024, MAC and these student-led communities have conducted over 30 public performances as a form of Universitas Indonesia’s contribution towards local arts and heritage.

Recording and Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage

MAC also takes part in the recording and preservation of intangible cultural heritage.

During February to March of 2024, MAC initiated a Syiar Ramadhan program which included exhibitions on calligraphy, Al-Qur’an, and Golok Ciomas; religious poetry writing competition and Arabic calligraphy competition; calligraphy workshop; cultural ngabuburit; art recitation (tadarus seni); and discussion on culture (sarasehan budaya).

In July 2024, MAC hosted a celebration on National Weaving (Tenun) Day in collaboration with Bakul Budaya Community of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB). This event featured a public discussion with the theme “Weaving the Story of Tidore Woven Fabrics” featuring Tidore weaving practitioner Anita Gathmir. Also in July 2024, MAC took part in Tumang Fair 2024 at Boyolali by providing various workshops regarding traditional and modern arts and cultural practices for youths and artists. These workshops include Performing Arts Management with Reno Sarah, Photography with Gunawan Wicaksono, Videography with Yusuf Raharjo, and Creative Gamelan with Manik S. Suriyanto and Abbet Nugroho.

In November 2024, MAC hosted an ethnophotography exhibit of Minangkabau martial arts (pencak silat) by photographer Edy Utama. This event was conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Minang Diaspora Network-Global.

Universitas Indonesia Allows Remote Working

Universitas Indonesia formally promotes and allows telecommuting or remote working (Bekerja Dari Rumah or BDR) as a matter of official policy. The existence of telecommuting is proven by the Rector’s Circular Letter No. SE-1391/UN2.R4/SDM.03.00/2024, dated April 15, 2024. This official decree sets a policy mandating the arrangement of employee work systems into two categories: Work From Office (WFO/BDK) and Work From Home (WFH/BDR). The policy specifically permits a maximum of 30% of non-public-facing employees to work remotely (BDR). This directive serves as public evidence of a formal, implemented standard practice to reduce employee commuting by offering flexible work arrangements.

Universitas Indonesia Provides Affordable Housing for Students

The provision of student dormitory facilities at Universitas Indonesia (UI) is carried out strategically by the university to support accommodation needs, character development, and the formation of an inclusive academic community. UI builds and manages dormitories to:

  1. Support students from outside the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek) or other regions to ensure they have safe and affordable accommodation.
  2. Encourage equitable access to education, especially for students from low-income families.
  3. Build a cross-faculty learning community with a conducive academic and social atmosphere.

The UI Dormitory is managed under the coordination of the UI Dormitory Office, which is supervised by the Directorate for Supporting Educational Facilities Management. The UI Dormitory is located in the complex near Universitas Indonesia’s main gate (Gerbatama) and the Health Sciences Cluster (RIK), accommodating ± 2,000 residents. Facilities at the UI Dormitory include bedrooms, Wi-Fi, a communal kitchen, study rooms, laundry services, prayer rooms, and 24-hour security.

Universitas Indonesia ensures housing remains highly affordable for students by setting average rental fees between IDR 200,000 and IDR 500,000 per month (or approximately USD 11,76 and USD 29,41 per month), depending on the room type. These fees are significantly below commercial prices in the Depok area.
