Our Initiatives

Research Centers on Environmental Sustainability at Universitas Indonesia

As a higher education institution committed to sustainability, UI has established numerous research centers across our faculties. Each center is supported by dedicated full-time staff, reflecting UI’s strong commitment to advancing sustainability. These professionals actively contribute by leveraging their expertise to conduct research, drive innovation, and develop practical solutions to environmental challenges. Their involvement reinforces UI’s position as a proactive leader in promoting sustainability initiatives. The following are a few notable research centers in UI that focus on sustainability:

Faculty/University Research Center
Graduate School of Sustainable Development Pusat Penelitian Sumber Daya Manusia dan Lingkungan
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, under the Institute for Sustainable Earth & Resources Sustainable Development Goals Hub
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, under the Institute for Sustainable Earth & Resources Research Center for Climate Change
Universitas Indonesia Disaster Risk Reduction Center
Universitas Indonesia Scientific Modeling, Application, Research, and Training for City-centered Innovation and Technology
Universitas Indonesia Center for Sustainability and Waste Management

At UI, our research centers not only embody our strong commitment to environmental sustainability but also serve as vital pillars in supporting undergraduate and graduate education. As hubs of knowledge and expertise, they enrich our academic curriculum by providing valuable resources and insights. Through close collaboration with our lecturers, the latest research findings are seamlessly integrated into classroom learning, fostering an interactive and practice-oriented educational experience.

Beyond this, our research centers contribute significantly to teaching and mentoring at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We routinely organize workshops and seminar series tailored to each center’s field of expertise, strengthening academic instruction and guidance. We also facilitate cross-faculty mentoring, which helps enhance student competencies and improve research outputs, particularly through collaborative scientific publications.

This synergy between our research centers and academic programs reinforces UI’s dedication to cultivating excellence in both scholarship and education, while advancing our sustainability agenda and nurturing a culture of innovation.

In fact, UI has a designated research center for curriculum and education development called Lembaga Kajian Kurikulum dan Kebijakan Pendidikan (LK3P). In the development of education, LK3P conducts field research studies and meta-analyses of education and curriculum issues; special analyses of strategic themes in the education and curriculum sector; preparation of reports and formulation of policies to improve the quality of early childhood, primary, secondary, and higher education. LK3P also publishes their studies and policy briefs; as well as facilitates consultation, legislation, advocacy, public dialogues, seminars, and workshops. Another example is the involvement of UI’s Center for Strategic and Global Studies in conducting a Planetary Carbon Certification Program which is a mandatory part of the Environmental Science program curriculum.
